Church History

History of New Covenant Fellowship Baptist Church

"How can I say thanks, for all the things that you’ve done for me…Things so undeserved that you gave to prove your love for me.

The voices of a million angels could not express my gratitude, all that I am and ever hope to be Lord, I owe it all to thee..

To God be the glory….To God be the glory…to God be the glory for the things he has done." Walter Hawkins

New Covenant Fellowship Baptist Church had a miraculous beginning.  It all began on a spring evening May 2002. God used a group of 35 believers who were gathered in a circle, in a parking lot on Campostella Road, to start anew as they prayed for deliverance, guidance and direction.

The believers, who later became known as “The Pioneers”, were determined to stay together as a Christian Fellowship and body of believers in Christ. They joined together and accepted the challenge, choice and change as they proceeded with faith, determination and conviction.

The Late Clifford French made the initial phone call and asked Reverend Clyde L. Doxey Jr. to accept the position as Pastor of the Fellowship to lead the flock.

Rev. Doxey did not immediately accept the position as Pastor but he advised Bro French, if they were able to find a suitable location, he would be happy to meet with the body and offer

“A Word of Encouragement”.

Subsequent meetings were then held at the Godwin Student Union Building at Norfolk State University to plan and organize. During this process Pastor Doxey went to God personally for guidance and direction. Also, at this same time Pastor Doxey received a phone call from one of his brothers in the ministry who asked “Doc, what are you going to be doing on Sunday?”

Rev. Doxey was then reminded that the Third Sunday in May, was regarded as the birthday of the Church, it was Pentecost Sunday, and that’s when Rev. Doxey received his confirmation from God, that he must go forth and be the Shepherd.

Not only did he received confirmation to go forth and be the Shepherd, but the Holy Spirit reminded him that the church was now under a “New Covenant “and because of these spiritually enhanced gatherings, the name, New Covenant Fellowship Baptist Church was born (NCFBC).

The first worship service was held on “Pentecost Sunday” May 19, 2002, at the Days Inn on Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake Virginia. This was a defining moment as well as a very memorable experience. Those who attended this service were encouraged to bring their own chairs as God continued to reaffirm to us that he would not leave us or forsake us.

Without the assistance of elevators to get to the second floor, we watched seniors made their way with the aid of canes and walkers to the 2nd floor.

The first service was spirit filled and included everything we needed to have a complete worship experience.

From the small conference room at the Days Inn, the journey continued to a place on 35th Street in Norfolk, Virginia called “The Cage”.

This validated our understanding that God is Omni-Present…” everywhere at the same time” Although this venue served as a night club on Saturday nights, we were encouraged by the blessings and words of salvation that followed on Sunday mornings.

At this location God blessed us with our first convert and new member. This was another confirmation that God was leading and directing us, and we were being obedient to His will.

In July of the same year, the Lord blessed us with our next place of worship that was located at 1002 Hazel Court in Chesapeake Virginia. It was there where we were blessed with tremendous growth, both numerically and spiritually as well as a larger facility that was needed for worship. While worshipping at Hazel Ct, we were blessed with one member of the diaconate who was later ordained… He was Deacon James Johnson.

As we were experiencing the joy of numerical growth, God was also providing the blessings of the spiritual growth that was necessary.  During our five-year interlude, several ministries were established and the church’s motto of “Reaching Beyond the Walls” was created.

It was during this period of continued growth, and expansion we began our search for another facility that would accommodate our current and future needs.

Although we were able to facilitate our own worship services, bible study, meetings and choir rehearsals, we were not able to have enough room for other churches to join in and fellowship with us at our location, but we trusted and believed that God had already made provisions for our Fellowship. What we did not know that it was by way of a hurricane named “Isabelle”.

In 2003 a hurricane named Isabelle came with full force and crushed the building that stood on the lot of 3044 South Military Highway in Chesapeake, Virginia which paved the way for a new building that is now the property being purchased by New Covenant Fellowship Baptist Church.

Since 2007 we have worked diligently to maintain and fortify the ministries of Diaconate, Trustee, Music, Finance, Christian Board of Education, Youth, Ushers, Women’s, Men and Building Steering Committee.

New Covenant Fellowship began through a miraculous birth, we are thankful to God for the new mercies he gives us each and every day

This has truly been a decade of prayer, determination and faith.
